Feel free to call 505-362-2675 or email Debbie with any questions. Thanks!
In this class, you’ll learn 14 techniques for painting fabric, including some that look airbrushed! You’ll leave class with 4 yards of hand-painted fat quarters, and no two will be alike. These paints are completely colorfast once heat-set. No dye powders to mix either! We’ll experiment with scrunching, sun printing, mottling, sponging, stamping, pleating, tilting and splattering. We’ll twist and twirl, and do shibori too! We’ll even paint skies and water, & lots more. Detailed handout included. Easy techniques, no prior experience necessary. Make your quilts, wearables & decollages truly unique. Warning: fabric painting can be addictive! See examples at www.debbiejones.com on the Painted Fabrics page. (Note: Address will be given by email when you register.)

Your class fee includes: Setacolor paint in cups, plastic, pipettes, foam-core board, a detailed handout and many other supplies. You’ll also use Debbie’s poles, boards, stamps, sponges, fabric overlays, frames, etc.

Here’s what to bring to class:

Fabric*:  Bring 16 fat quarters (18”x22”) of good quality solid white fabric; any natural fibers are OK, like cotton, silk, rayon, or blends thereof. They should be all white, or white-on-white prints, except one fat quarter should be in the medium-or-dark solid color of your choice, no pastels.
Pre-Washing: Either buy PFD fabric (prepared for dyeing), or prewash fabric and then preshrink in the dryer. Do not use fabric softeners!
Before class, cut your fabric into fat-quarter sized pieces, 18”x22”, because we’ll experiment with many different techniques and you’ll want to make numerous samples.

* You can order cotton and silk fabric, t-shirts and scarves online at www.dharmatrading.com, who ships same or next day from California, or at www.prochemicalanddye.com
in Massachusetts who processes orders a bit slower. You can get t-shirts at Michaels/Hobby Lobby – get 100% cotton! Debbie will have Pimatex cotton (tightly woven combed
cotton, pfd) & a silk/cotton blend fabric for sale in class, optionally.

Brushes:  Foam (sponge) brushes, at least 4 small size, 2 medium, and 1 large. (Walmart’s Craft Dept.)
Plastic:  20+ plastic kitchen-size trash bags, prefer white color with flat bottoms, not gathered bottoms.
(Note: The Hefty and Glad brand bags have flat bottoms; not sure about other brands.)
Cups, containers & spoons:  6+ small plastic containers with lids (such as yogurt cups), plus 1-2 medium size container for your brushes, such as a margarine tub or old coffee cup,
and 6+ plastic spoons.
Bucket or pail: Any size will do; needs to be clean but not new (available at Walmart or Dollar Store).
Spray bottle:  for misting fabric with water.
Fabric scissors, paper scissors, masking tape, and an old hand towel or rag.
Permanent marking pen:  to write the technique number & your initials on each fabric (Sharpie, Pigma, etc.)
Disposable plastic gloves, a few pairs (optional):  Necessary only if you have “fancy fingernails” or if you don’t want to get paint on your hands and around cuticles/fingernails!
(Most washes off, some takes a few days.)
Lunch and a drink or two. Please bring it in a cooler.
Wear old clothes & shoes; bring sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses &/or hat. We hope to paint in shade, then carry our wet fabrics into direct sunlight to dry. Still, you’ll definitely be
in the sun off and on.
Camera: To take photos of class samples and folding techniques, optional.

Note:  If you have trouble standing for periods of time, bring a small folding lawn chair, if you have one, or contact Debbie to see if she has an extra one available. (Even with a chair available, most people prefer to stand while painting, because it’s easier to paint the entire 18”x22” piece of fabric from a standing position.)

If there is any of the above that you can't bring, let Debbie know before class
and she will try to get them for you, or she may have extra to share.

If you have any questions before class, you’re welcome to call or email Debbie:
